Murray Harbour & Eastern Shore

This is a perfect trip for families and beginner kayakers. From here we explore the islets at the river’s mouth, the port of Murray Harbour, and the varied shoreline north to Panmure Island.  The warm waters of the Northumberland Strait are among the safest areas for sea kayaking anywhere. The area is rich in bird and marine life, too. Osprey and bald eagles are commonly sighted here and grey harbour seals are likely to accompany us on our excursion.  Panmure Island boasts one of the finest beaches on PEI, where we’ll find ample opportunity to enjoy the sun and surf.

Day One

You will be picked up from your hotel in Charlottetown at 8:30 am. You will meet and get to know your guides during this short shuttle to the launch site in Murray River. There, we’ll pack the kayaks and the guides will get you started with some basic paddling instruction onshore. Once on the water, we’ll take some time to offer paddling techniques that will help you become more comfortable in your boat. Your guides will prepare a delicious lunch (perhaps smoked salmon with bagels or lobster rolls?) while you relax, dig for clams, beachcomb or take a dip.

We’ll camp on the beach, arriving in late afternoon, to allow plenty of time for walking, swimming, snorkeling, reading, and stargazing.

Day Two

As we rise in the warm rays of the morning sun, we’ll have coffee and a leisurely breakfast before packing up and continuing in the kayaks. We’ll visit an offshore island or secluded cove for lunch, complete with pristine beaches and red cliffs. You’ll appreciate how close you can get to birdlife without disturbing them as we pass sand bars, salt marshes and barrier dunes. Keep your eyes open for seals – this is the only area of the Island where they congregate, and they are as curious of us as we are of them! If you wish, your informative guide will tell you about the cultural and natural history of the regions you explore, or you can simply enjoy the tranquility of this lovely coast. We’ll camp on the beach again this evening, where we’ll prepare a delicious meal and all you have to do is relax and enjoy the sunset.

Day Three

It’s just a short paddle for us this morning, as we make our way up the sheltered estuary of the Cardigan River. We’ll have lunch, pack up the kayaks, and be met by our shuttle for the drive back to Charlottetown between 2:00 and 4:00 pm.

Notes

Although this trip is suitable for novice paddlers, bear in mind that we are paddling on the ocean and wind and weather will be a factor. Poor weather may force us to change our paddling plans – for example, we sometimes run the trip in the opposite direction, choose different campsites, or vary our launch and landing sites. Expect to be in the kayaks about four hours each day, with at least two breaks.
