June 19, 2001 Trip Report
Participants: Don MacDonald, Pam Peters, Stéfanie Miron-Fyfe, Erica Stanley, Pat Crawford, Wendell McDowell, Don McDowell, Kipp Lemke, Pascal, Sandra Horne, Calvin DesRoches, Barb Ramsay-DesRoches, Todd Gaudin, Natalie, Todd MacLean, John Wade (Swade), Shirley Wright
Experience Level: From beginner to advanced.
Weather: 12 degrees Celsius / light wind / sunny!
Animals: Herons, black backed gulls, cormorants
Personal Thoughts / Reminders / Memories: Everyone met outside on the beach across from the lighthouse around 5:30. All were on the water by 6:15. A faster start means a longer paddle. May have been a smaller group than expected considering the weather.
The group was taken to the bullpen for instruction on the "Bow Rudder" with and without edging. I noticed people practising all evening, great to see!
We then paddled around the breakwater to Cape Turner or Orby Head. It was a quick paddle out but the paddle in was a little longer with a slight breeze against us.
Once in the channel outside the office, Pascal and Don wanted to try Eskimo Rolls. Wendell and I did some as well. I still need to work on technique. The guys were having fun practising self-rescues anyway. The water is getting warm so it will be time to push our skills to the limit…but remember, you still have to dress properly.
See you next week.
