Outside Expeditions Inc. has been outfitting biking, kayaking and walking expeditions throughout the Maritimes since 1993. It is with great pleasure that we introduce you to our beautiful region and its friendly people. Owner/operators Shirley Wright and Bryon Howard, and their complement of experienced, safety conscious guides have brought more than 6000 people to view the wonders of Atlantic Canada from the unique perspective of a sea kayak. With varied interests including photography, bioregionalism, biology, ecology, birding, history, music, sustainability and geology, our guides know the Island like the palm of their hand and are eager to share their knowledge with you. They are trained in wilderness first aid, follow the guidelines of TASK (Trade Association of Sea Kayaking), and have many years’ experience leading trips in Atlantic Canada and around the world.

We choose our areas of operation to reflect the quality of wildlife, beauty and cultural interest of the Maritimes, and structure our trips to allow you the freedom to relax, wander the beach or go for a swim, unrushed and free to make your own discoveries. In our constantly accelerating world there is a rare peace to be found in slowing one’s pace to that of the next paddle stroke.

All our expeditions benefit and involve people of local communities and generate funds that help preserve and promote the areas we travel through. We are proud to have been recognized by the Business Development Bank of Canada to receive Prince Edward Islands Young Entrepreneurial Award in 1995.

What are Outside Expeditions trips like?
To enjoy our trips you need only to be healthy, to appreciate the outdoors, and have a sense of adventure. On our Cape Breton, Newfoundland and Baja water trips some prior tent camping experience will help prepare you for the remote areas we visit.

Pristine beaches, diverse cultures, and unique bird and marine life are the rewards! In Cape Breton an intermediate level of paddling is recommended to best enjoy the humbling power and rich wildlife of these areas.

How big are the groups?
Small groups of 10 to12 participants ensure we maintain the highest standards and travel in style. Ages generally range from 20 to 60, but our participants have included babies as young as six months old, families of all ages and even 70-year-olds.

What is included?
Sea kayaks & bikes; safety and camping equipment (including radios); inns/hotels; great meals from lunch on day 1 to lunch on the final day while on expeditions.

Do I need paddling experience?
No prior kayaking experience is necessary except on our Cape Breton Kayaking Expedition. You should be in good health and moderately fit. As with most activities, the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the trip. If you have any doubts about your suitability for a particular trip, please contact us.

The Food
We pride ourselves on the presentation, variety, and taste of our meals. We use fresh fruit and vegetables, and delight in offering island specialties. If you have any special dietary needs, just let us know in advance.

Private Groups & Custom Trips
Each year we find more past clients returning with family and friends. If our scheduled departures don't suit you, we'll be happy to put together a special itinerary for a family with young children or private group of friends, either expedition style or lodge based. For experienced paddlers we can offer escorted, rather than fully guided trips, in a catered or self-catered style. A minimum of four is required and costs are provided on request.
